We are excited to announce the latest Elevar product feature, new vs returning user data!

In short, new vs returning user data gives you a way to improve your marketing campaigns by identifying who has purchased from your shop before and who has not.

This article provides additional information on this groundbreaking update:

What is New vs Returning User Data

New vs returning user data can help you significantly enhance your targeted marketing strategies by tracking the respective behaviors of users who have purchased from you before and users who haven’t.

This update adds a “customer_order_count” parameter to the dl_purchase event, allowing Elevar to determine if a user is new or returning.

Old Way:

  • Pulls data from Shopify’s liquid or web pixel property.
  • Not consistent data due to a 15-minute delay in updating after a new order has been created.
  • Web Pixel only populates a value when a user is logged in.
  • Only sends data for online store orders.

New Way:

  • Pulls order count data offline directly from Shopify.
  • 95%+ accuracy when compared to Shopify.
  • Sends data regardless of whether the user is logged in.
  • Sends data for offline store orders (like POS, recurring, etc).

New vs returning user data is available for the following destinations: GA4, Impact Radius, Awin, Rakuten, Facebook, Snapchat, Partnerize, and ShareASale.

What Can You Do With This?

This enhancement can help you make more informed decisions about your marketing strategies and budget, plus tailor campaigns to different segments of your customer base.

Specifically, new vs returning user data provides the following capabilities:

  • Affiliate marketing platforms can compensate partners based on whether a sale originated from a new or returning user. This can help to ensure you’re not overpaying or underpaying your partners.
  • Performance marketers can segment audiences in Ads to directly target new customers, and to market to returning users differently. Customizing your campaigns based on whether a user is new or returning can help you reach more prospective customers while building brand loyalty with existing customers.
